Personal use importation restriction time lines

The Government of Canada through Health Canada is restricting personal importation (also known as own use importation) of veterinary drugs for food-producing animals or animals intended to be consumed as food (including horses).
The restrictions on importation for personal use will begin when the regulations come into effect on November 13, 2017. This means no Medically Important Antimicrobials will be authorized for importation after that date.

Working Together
The CVMA, along with other stakeholders, have been engaging with the Veterinary Drug Directorate about upcoming federal government regulation and policy changes and will continue to support these actions with ongoing engagement and communication.
Communicating Key Issues and Developments
The CVMA, in partnership with the Canadian Council of Veterinary Registrars (CCVR), created a section on its website called Veterinary Oversight of Antimicrobial Use in Animals in Canada to share important information on key issues and developments as the new regulations were being finalized and implemented. The CCVR and the CVMA’s Veterinary Pharmaceutical Stewardship Advisory Group developed a pan-Canadian framework of professional standards for veterinarians regarding veterinary oversight of antimicrobial use. It is available for download here.
