Status of Rabies in Saskatchewan – May 2017 The Saskatchewan rabies report for the month of May, 2017, is attached for your information. There were three (3) positive cases in May. There were three positive skunks; contact with the skunks resulted in the revaccination of a previously vaccinated dog in one case, 3 months quarantine and immediate vaccination of a previously vaccinated dog in the second case, and euthanasia of an in-contact dog in the third case. The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies is conducting a follow up to its ground-breaking 2012 study, Cats in Canada: A Comprehensive Report on the Cat Overpopulation Crisis, and invites you to participate. This year, the survey is being conducted by Ipsos, an independent, Canadian-based market and opinion research firm. This extensive research project is critical to understanding cat population issues in Canada and how they have evolved in the five years of dedicated focus since the publication of the 2012 report. Source: Manitoba Pork PED Case #11 found in Manitoba sow barn Tuesday, May 02, 2017 On May 2, 2017, Manitoba’s Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) confirmed positive test results for PEDv from a sow operation in southeast Manitoba. The CVO has activated Manitoba Agriculture’s Emergency Operation Centre to assist the affected producer and conduct a full disease investigation. Control measures were implemented immediately, and a plan has been developed for restricted site access, barn clean-up and animal care. Producers within a 5-km radius of the infected site have been alerted, and are monitoring their herds and collecting samples for testing. All
SSPCA launches provincial Animal Safekeeping Program
A growing body of research demonstrates that animal abuse and interpersonal violence are closely linked. A recent survey by the Saskatchewan SPCA showed that concern for the safety of family pets and livestock has an impact on the decision making of individuals leaving situations involving domestic violence. Over 77% of respondents reported knowing at least one individual who did not leave an abusive relationship due to concern for the care and safekeeping of their animals. In 2017, Canada will undergo its most comprehensive evaluation of veterinary services to date. The CFIA will be coordinating an assessment of the quality of veterinary infrastructure across the country and how it contributes to maintaining and strengthening international trade, ensuring the health of our nation’s animals, and protecting the public from the risk of zoonotic disease. The evaluation will be conducted by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and will involve the CFIA, federal and provincial governments, and representatives from the veterinary sectors and animal industry. Status of Rabies in Saskatchewan – December 2016 There were seven (7) positive cases detected from November 1 – 30. There were four positive skunks: Case 1: three unvaccinated cats were vaccinated and quarantined for three months. Case 2: one dog with out-of-date vaccinations was re-vaccinated and quarantined for three months; two people received RPEP. Case 3: one previously vaccinated dog was re-vaccinated (no quarantine).
