Invitation to take CFHS Cat Population Survey

Invitation to take CFHS Cat Population Survey

May 17, 2017

The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies is conducting a follow up to its ground-breaking 2012 study, Cats in Canada: A Comprehensive Report on the Cat Overpopulation Crisis, and invites you to participate. This year, the survey is being conducted by Ipsos, an independent, Canadian-based market and opinion research firm.

This extensive research project is critical to understanding cat population issues in Canada and how they have evolved in the five years of dedicated focus since the publication of the 2012 report. Current statistics suggest the number of homeless cats is decreasing. We need the five-year evaluation to reach a conclusive answer. We are seeking the opinions of municipal shelters, veterinarians, humane societies and SPCAs, rescue organizations, trap-neuter-return groups, spay/neuter groups, and other such organizations that help house or care for unwanted, abandoned, stray, and feral cats in Canada.

We would greatly appreciate you taking the time to give us your feedback. It is expected to take 25 minutes to complete the survey electronically. All responses are confidential and are reported in aggregate only. Because the survey, once started, cannot be saved and resumed at a later time, we ask you to have the following information ready to complete the survey:

  • Information about your municipality and municipal bylaws regarding cats
  • Intake and outcome statistics for cats and dogs (if applicable)
  • Spay/neuter statistics
  • Permanent identification statistics
  • Shelter capacity and length of stay
  • Reasons given for surrender of animals
  • Reasons animals may be euthanized
  • Reasons animals may not be sterilized

Your participation and data are important to the success of the study and to finding solutions. A practical report will once again be produced, and we will share the results generated through this research.

Only one response per organization will be used in the data collection, so please coordinate accordingly with others in your organization. If your organization operates more than one facility at different locations, please submit one response per location.
