“Proposed service fee increases for veterinary drugs will cause problems”
Serious consequences expected from service fee increases for animal health products Guelph, ON (April 5, 2018) – Proposed service fee increases for veterinary drugs will create serious and unintended consequences, says a new report from Agri-Food Economic Systems. The report, commissioned by the Canadian Animal Health Institute, finds that proposed service fees for the review and maintenance of veterinary drugs are to increase up to 500 per cent, effective April 1st, 2019. Access to veterinary drugs would become more challenging as a result of these excessively high fees. This in turn will result in fewer veterinary drugs available in Canada
CFIA releases new CMIB – Old and new both valid until Dec 2018
New CMIB published on CFIA’s website April 4, 2018 CFIA has been working on a new version of the Compendium of Medicating Ingredient Brochures (CMIB) to better align with Health Canada’s regulatory and policy changes related to Medically Important Antimicrobials (MIA). The new CMIB was published on the CFIA’s website on April 4, 2018 (see announcement attached); however, the policy changes for MIAs only take effect on December 1, 2018. Chief Veterinary Officer honoured by Premier
Dr Betty Althouse recently received the Premiere’s Award for Excellence in recognition for her contributions to the province’s livestock industry. Dr Betty Althouse, the Chief Veterinary Officer with Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Agriculture, was named as one of six recipients of the Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Public Service. Personal use importation restriction time lines
From CVMA: The Government of Canada through Health Canada is restricting personal importation (also known as own use importation) of veterinary drugs for food-producing animals or animals intended to be consumed as food (including horses). The restrictions on importation for personal use will begin when the regulations come into effect on November 13, 2017. This means no Medically Important Antimicrobials will be authorized for importation after that date. Timelines for moving MIAs to PDL released
From CVMA: Health Canada is moving a number of Medically Important Antimicrobials (MIAs) approved for veterinary use before 2004 to the Prescription Drug List (PDL). With this change, Health Canada will establish the same level of oversight for those MIAs approved before 2004 as for those approved after. As of December 1, 2018, all MIAs for veterinary use will be on the PDL and must be sold by prescription only.
