La Ronge

The Service Learning Group of the WCVM is planning its next spay/neuter and wellness clinic for May 4th – 6th, 2018 in the La Ronge area. We are looking for keen veterinarians and RVTs to assist us with running this clinic.

This trip is expanding on our past work in the area and will be part of the Remote Clinical Practice rotation offered to 4th year students at the WCVM. Students will work to achieve several learning outcomes in areas such as anesthesia, surgery, wellness, cultural awareness and community engagement. We will also include formal outreach activities such as talking to children at community schools and involving volunteers from the community in our event. In addition, there may be Sask Polytechnic AHT students present at this event who will benefit from the learning opportunities.

The goals of the event are community outreach and education, education of our veterinary and vet tech students, and assisting the communities with identifying and reaching goals concerning pet population control and public health challenges. As with our past clinics, we do not expect to match the pace or volume of other such clinics, however this event gives vets and techs the opportunity to be involved in teaching, learning and experiencing the north while contributing to positive change in the community.

If you are interested in helping out, please contact us. We look forward to your participation and contribution in continuing to build and foster strong relationships with pets and their families in this area.
Prospective volunteers can contact Dr Jordan Woodsworth at the WCVM at for further information.

Participation is requested for an ongoing research project at the University of Saskatchewan conducted by the College of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Dentistry entitled “Identification of Bacterial Zoonotic Pathogens in the Oral Environment of Dogs Fed a Raw Meat-Based Diet.” This project will analyze the saliva of dogs primarily fed raw meat-based food diets (RMBDs). In this analysis, the saliva will be tested to evaluate the presence of various zoonotic pathogens in the dog’s oral environment. Species of concern include, but are not limited to, Salmonella, Camplyobacter, Listeria, and Escherchia Coli. The data collected will be compared to dogs on traditional kibble-based diets. While it is well-established that direct contact with the feces of infected or carrier is a risk factor for disease in humans, the potential for saliva to act as a mode of transmission is yet to be established. This is a preliminary study to help answer the question: Are humans at a higher risk of zoonotic disease if companion animals are fed raw meat-based diet?

In this study, sterile swabs will be used to collect saliva from the dog. After this sample is taken, it will be sent to the Prairie Diagnostic Lab at the University of Saskatchewan’s Veterinary College to determine if the bacteria of interest is present. This swab needs to be taken within one hour of the client’s pet being fed and will take approximately five minutes. If the client elects, their results will be disclosed to the client, as well as you as their family veterinarian.

The study start and end dates are March 1 to April 15th, 2018. If your client is interested in participating, please email or call Dr Candace Lowe and we will then contact your clients directly to arrange a convenient time to sample the oral cavity. The participation of the owner (and their dog) is voluntary, there will be no charge to the clients and the owner may choose to withdraw their dog from the study at any time without any penalty.

The data collected will be distributed to the involved group members and will be presented in the College of Dentistry as an undergraduate research project.
If you have any questions regarding the study or with the procedure guidelines feel free to contact Dr Candace Lowe.
