We are seeking a great team member! Part time or full time veterinarian position open for the candidate who seeks to be part of a team of exceptional and abundant support staff (our staff enjoy monthly potlucks!) in a mixed animal practice that excels at being forward-thinking, technologically advanced and fully progressive.

Interested in mentorship with a flexible on call schedule? Perhaps it’s every third weekend on call and a few nights a month (or you can take more as compensation is paid for all calls seen outside of regular business hours). Low after hours call volume exists (average 3 to 5 calls per week!) in mixed animal practice (65 % SA and 35% LA)

We have an amazing newly built facility with in house DR xray (portable unit for all animals), DR dental xray and full dental cart, In house lab for CBC, CHEM and more (fructosamine, phenobarb etc). The majority of LA obstetrical cases are handled in clinic.

There is the potential to earn more than $80 000 per annum with paid licensing fees, continuing education allowance, group insurance plan (health, life and disability), staff discounts and more! We are also willing to assist with relocation costs.

Melville is a great, growing community with ample opportunities for family members to seek employment, play (regional and provincial parks are not far away, lots of kid and adult activities and sports) and enjoy life outside of work! This is not small town living and this is not your typical rural mixed animal practice!
Please call Dr Deana Schenher at 306-728-2633 for more information! Visit www.melvillevet.com and check us out! We are also on Facebook and twitter!

A well established, very successful mixed veterinary practice for sale in southwest Saskatchewan. The clinic was established in 1970 and has been operated by Dr. Ken Cadieux since that time. Presently it is 60% large animal and 40% small animal with the majority of the work being done in-clinic. The large animal portion being mainly cow/calf involves large numbers of semen tests, pregnancy tests, calvings and caesarean sections. The small animal clientele is ever increasing. The clinic is presently operated by one veterinarian but realistically could support at least two practitioners. The clinic serves a very wide area and there is much room for expansion.

The clinic is located immediately south of the town of Shaunavon, a very progressive town with much to offer. The town of about 1750 offers excellent schools, recreation facilities, a hospital, churches, all professional services as well as great hunting and fishing. The town’s comprehensive website can be accessed at https://shaunavon.com

Service Learning Group of the WCVM. Our next spay/neuter and wellness clinic is planned for August 18th – 20th, 2017 in the La Ronge area. We are looking for keen veterinarians to assist us with running this clinic.

This trip is expanding on our past work in the area and will be part of the Remote Clinical Practice rotation offered to 4th year students at the WCVM. Students will work to achieve several learning outcomes in areas such as anesthesia, surgery, wellness, cultural awareness and community engagement. We will also include formal outreach activities such as talking to children in the community and involving volunteers from the community in our event. In addition, there may be Sask Polytech RVT students present at this event who will benefit from the learning opportunities.

The goals of the event are community outreach and education, education of our veterinary and RVT students, and assisting the communities with identifying and reaching goals concerning pet population control and public health challenges. As with our past clinics, we do not expect to match the pace or volume of other such clinics, however this event gives vets and techs the opportunity to be involved in teaching, learning and experiencing the north while contributing to positive change in the community.

If you are interested in helping out, please contact us. We look forward to your participation and contribution in continuing to build and foster strong relationships with pets and their families in this area.
Prospective volunteers can contact Dr Jordan Woodsworth at the WCVM at wcvmservicelearning@gmail.com for further information.

Looking for volunteer flocks in Saskatchewan! Over the last few years, researchers at the University of Calgary (Drs Michel Levy and John Gilleard) and the WCVM in Saskatoon (Dr Fabienne Uehlinger), have undertaken surveys of sheep farms in Alberta and Saskatchewan to assess the level of internal parasites present. We have also conducted more detailed research into the presence of deworming resistance in a number of flocks in Saskatchewan and Alberta. The results of this work suggests that many Saskatchewan and Alberta sheep flocks have high parasite burdens and that ivermectin and fenbendazole/albendazole resistant parasites are common.

Last year in Saskatchewan, we successfully worked with many sheep producers to determine the level of internal parasites in their flock and whether their on-farm deworming protocol was successful. With the assistance of the Alberta Meat and Livestock Agency (ALMA) and the University of Saskatchewan, we are able to continue this year but need your help in making it happen!

If your sheep clients have 60* or more ewes and may be interested in this project, please make them aware of this study and ask them to contact me (information below). As part of the project, we ask producers for consent to share their flock’s results with you, their regular veterinarian. If such consent is given, then we will communicate all results to you as well as send you a composite summary of our findings later in the year.

As part of their participation, producers will receive free information about the burden of internal parasites in their flock and whether their deworming protocol was effective. If their farm is suitable for a controlled assessment of the efficacy of different deworming drugs (i.e. through a fecal egg count reduction test), then we would like to visit that farm specifically to conduct that part of the project. The ability to monitor different flocks, parasite burdens and deworming efficacy over several years in Saskatchewan and other parts of western Canada helps us to get solid information on which to base parasite management recommendations. This is important to try and maintain efficacy of current deworming drugs and to help the industry remain sustainable.

We are happy to hear from past as well as new participants! Thank you for your assistance in this project. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me either!

*There are specific reasons why we need to limit participation to flocks with 60 ewes or more. We realize that this excludes many producers that would be interested in participating and we sincerely apologize for that.

Volunteer horses to participate in metabolic research:
“Investigation of Novel Biomarkers for Early detection of Equine Metabolic Syndrome”

I am reaching out to veterinarians in the Saskatoon area for an ongoing collaborative study between the University of Calgary and Western College of Veterinary Medicine. This study is investigating incretin hormone tissue receptors involved in glucose homeostasis.

Vet students are participating as summer research students and we recently presented some of our earlier work in this area at the International Conference of Comparative Endocrinology.

So far we have recruited about 40 % of the cats we need between the WCVM and UCVM. We are looking at incretin hormone receptors in tissues from lean, overweight and diabetic cats and following up on two papers we have published that have generated interesting results. Our study has animal care and ethics approval at both the WCVM and the UCVM. We hope this study will have impact on how cats with diabetes and obesity are treated in the future.

We REALLY NEED YOUR HELP. If any of you have or know of a diabetic cat or a cat with Diabetic ketoacidosis (of any age) that unfortunately is being euthanized please consider enrolling the cat in our study. We need a blood sample prior to euthanasia and tissue samples which we have to collect within 30 minutes of euthanasia to flash freeze in liquid nitrogen. The cat can still go for a postmortem if desired or for mass or private cremation as requested by the owner. We do have to be present when the cat is euthanized to allow for our sample collection. We would prefer to see the cat at the VMC for euthanasia but we are willing to come to your clinic if necessary and will do our best to work around the clients timeline for euthanasia.

We are also looking for lean and obese control cats > 7 yrs of age that are being euthanized for other health related reasons to collect blood and tissue from as per the diabetic cats. The only exclusion criteria for the control and diabetic cats is they cannot have stage III or higher CKD, cannot have major GI disease (cancer or inflammatory bowel disease), cannot have uncontrolled hyperthyroidism or be on drugs such as glucocorticoids that interfere with insulin action.

We are happy to answer any questions you have about our study. Please also share this information with any vets you are working with or with any friends you know that unfortunately may be close to making the difficult decision to euthanize their cat for other health reasons. We need another 15 cats – 2 lean, 8 obese and 9 diabetic cats.
