We are currently undertaking new research at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, investigating a new protein associated with obesity and diabetes in cats, ‘nesfatin-1’. Nesfatin-1 provides promise as a marker to assess and monitor insulin resistance and improve overall management of diabetic cats.

We are currently recruiting newly diagnosed diabetic cats for part of our study, and it is essential that cats must not have started treatment before being enrolled in the study. We are also recruiting obese (Body Condition Score 8-9/9), otherwise healthy adult cats, 4-13 years of age for a single blood test, to compare to the diabetic cats.

Please see the attached client handout for additional information about ‘nesfatin-1’ and what clients will receive in return for their participation in our study. If any of your clients (or even if you yourself!) have a cat that fits these descriptions, and wish to take part in our study, then please direct them to contact us at the phone numbers and/or e-mail addresses provided in the handout.

We would greatly appreciate any help and support you could provide!
Cheers, Dr Melissa Meachem, Dr Liz Snead, and Dr Peter Toh
